An applicant for a Light Motor Vehicle Driving License will take the following tests:

  • Skill to stop and drive forward on a road with upward gradient without any backward movement.
  • Skill to drive forward on an '8’ shaped track
  • Skill of Parallel Parking (Reverse Parking)
  • Skill to drive in reverse in a ‘S’ shaped track

Pre-requisites for the Test

  • Candidate should possess a valid Learner’s License
  • Obtain a Test Date and Time Slot at the selected RTO
  • Candidate should obtain test slot separately for LMV
  • Pay the requisite fee and obtain challan for the same
  • Present himself at the RTO on the date and time

Sequence of Procedure

  • Candidate to report at the Registration Desk
  • Candidate should carry the LL, DL Fee Paid Receipt
  • Candidate’s ID, LL and other documents would be verified with the data available in the SARATI Software database
  • Candidate’s thumbs verification should carried out for Identity verification
  • Candidate, if eligible, would be provided Authorisation document to enter the Testing Area
  • The Authorisation document would have details such as Name, Date of Birth, Class of Vehicle for which the test is being attempted, LL number, LL issue date etc. and an Unique ID number and an RFID card for use in the test track
  • Candidate should enter the Testing area along with the vehicle and await his/her turn
  • When allowed to take the test, the candidate would swipe his/her RFID card at each track for verification
  • The candidate would be guided by Signal Lights in the track
  • During the time the candidate ID is being verified by the computer system, the signal light would be RED, flashing intermittently
  • If the candidate is eligible to take the test and if all the track sensors are properly positioned, the control computer would set the signal to GREEN
  • The candidate should start his vehicle and proceed with the test in the track as required in that particular track
  • When the candidate crosses the START line, the computer system would start a timer which would be running till the time the candidate either crosses the STOP line or the maximum time allotted for the runs out
  • During the course of the test, if any of the sensors were to be disturbed from their position, the computer system would detect all such violations
  • When the test is complete either due to the candidate crossing the STOP line or the timer running out, the computer system would allocate marks based on the number of sensors disturbed and the time taken for completing the test.
  • The vehicle movement during the test would be recorded on video and stored as part of the candidate’s record
  • The picture of the candidate would be captured, midway during the test, by a camera mounted inside the LMV, as additional record

LMV Test Sequence

Following skills are assessed for a motorcar driver:

  • Ability to Parallel Park (alongside a kerb).
  • Ability to drive forward on a road with upward Gradient without any backward movement.
  • Ability to drive forward on an ‘8’ shaped road.
  • Ability to drive backward on an ‘S’ shaped road.

Up-Gradient Track Test

Up Gradient Test

The sequences of events in this test are as under:

  • In this test, the candidate is expected drive forward on an inclined track without moving backward. He/she should position the vehicle in front of the sensor array on the track.
  • The candidate should swipe his/her RFID card in the Reader, positioned at the entry to the track for verification.
  • The candidate would be guided by Signal Lights in the track
  • During the time the candidate ID is being verified by the computer system, the signal light would be RED, flashing intermittently
  • If the candidate is eligible to take the test and the vehicle is positioned properly, the control computer would set the signal to GREEN
  • The candidate should start his vehicle move forward and cross the STOP line without any backward movement.
  • The Signal light would turn RED immediately after the crossing of the STOP line by the vehicle.
  • The computer system would monitor and detect any backward movement of the vehicle to allocate suitable penalty points
  • The vehicle movement during the test would be recorded on video and stored as part of the candidate’s record
  • The picture of the candidate would be captured, midway during the test, by a camera mounted inside the LMV, as additional record.

Forward ‘8’ Shaped Track Test

Forward ‘8’ Shaped Track Test

The sequences of events in this test are as under:

  • In this test, the candidate is expected to drive the vehicle in the forward direction, within the stipulated time, in a track shaped like the number 8.
  • The candidate should swipe his/her RFID card in the Reader, positioned at the entry to the track for verification
  • The candidate should start his vehicle move forward and cross the START line.
  • The Signal light would turn RED immediately after the crossing of the START line by the vehicle.
  • The candidate should drive forward on the track, without knocking down any of the marker poles positioned on the borders of the parking slot.
  • When the vehicle crosses the START line, the computer system would start a timer which would be running till the time the candidate either crosses the STOP line or the maximum time allotted for the runs out.
  • During the course of the test, if any of the sensors were to be disturbed from their position, the computer system would detect all such violations and allocate suitable penalty marks.
  • When the test is complete either due to the candidate crossing the STOP line or the timer running out, the computer system would allocate marks based on the number of sensors disturbed and the time taken for completing the test.
  • The vehicle movement during the test would be recorded on video and stored as part of the candidate’s record
  • The picture of the candidate would be captured, midway during the test, by a camera mounted inside the LMV, as additional record.
